Frequently Asked Home Extension Questions

Q: Do I need planning permission?

A: Your type of property and where you live has a bearing on this. Recently introduced laws have given more leeway in the form of ‘permitted development’. This allows you to extend up to a height of 3 metres from base level, 3 metres out from the original rear wall of an attached dwelling (either terraced and semi-detached) and up to 4 metres out from the original wall of a detached dwelling. You may also extend right across the rear width of the property. Our planning advisers will, if there is any doubt, apply either for full planning or a letter of lawfulness at the pre-build stage and we will keep you updated of progress.

Q: How do I get a quotation from The Home Extension Company®?

A: Simply click on our Free Site Survey button and we will be in touch to arrange for one of our surveyors to visit your property and shortly thereafter we will deliver an all inclusive design and accurate quotation.

Q: How long does the extension take to build?

A: Because of the way we construct using SIP’s (Structurally Insulated Panels), an extension typically takes 2 weeks from start to finish without all the normal mess associated with traditionally built extensions.

Q: What are SIP’s (Structurally Insulated Panels)

A: Structural insulated panels SIPs, are a composite building material. They consist of an insulating layer of rigid polymer foam sandwiched between two layers of structural OSB (Oriented Strand Board). SIPs are extremely strong and share the same structural properties as an I-beam or I-column. They are also know for their excellent thermal properties.

Q: Are there any considerations regarding building regulations?

A: Our extensions are built to comply with all current building regulations and we liaise with the local inspectors before and during your project.

Q: Who will install the extension?

A: Our fully trained, professional and customer focused team will carry out the installation process with the minimum of time and fuss. When they have finished, your extension is fully cleaned, and the area is tidied and all building materials etc removed from the site.

Q: What is included in the price?

A: Our prices include VAT and the cost of installing suitable foundations (subject to site survey). Your final price, including any options and extras, is the price you pay for the finished extension ready to use straight away. There are no hidden costs.

Q: How much of the project will The Home Extension Company® handle for you?

A: All of it! We do all the pre-build works from design through to architectural drawings, structural calculations and planning submission (if required). We do all the necessary structural works, (including the removal of walls and installations of structural supports), we install the foundations, build the extension inside and out, install electrics etc to your specification, plaster and decorate the interior and fit flooring. You will then be issued with a Completion Certificate to prove that it has been built to comply with all relevant regulations.. All you do is put in your furniture and you are all set!
